Let’s learn how to draw Hisashi Mitsui from Slam Dunk today!
Hisashi Mitsui (三井 寿) is one of the main protagonists of Slam Dunk. He is the Shooting Guard of the Shohoku Basketball Team. Despite having the opportunity to join more prestigious high schools, he choose to go to Shohoku because of Coach Mitsuyoshi Anzai, who encouraged him not to give up hope until the last second, and enabled him to win in the Junior High tournament. He injured his knee (which already had an old injury) during practice in his freshman year and exacerbated his injury by returning to play before he had been healed. An imprudent early return to the court reinjured the knee more severely, leading to a basketball hiatus of over a year. As a result he was not able to compete in the district tournament, and was disheartened into quitting basketball and becoming the leader of a gang.
He has black hair, the length of which changes during story from shoulder length with dark blue highlights, through shorter hair to a wavy style hair. He has indigo eyes. He has a broken frontal teeth in both sides, but later he gains a false teeth to match up his broken frontal teeth. His Basketball Jersey is red and black and its alternate pallete is red and white with the no. 14.
In his 1st year, Mitsui has an overflowing confidence and is very competitive. Despite his eventual recovery, his exclusion embittered him and he quits basketball. He became a gang leader but regretted it eventually. While his lack of stamina is his main weakness, the great determination and trust for his team is what keeps him going. His immaturity and impatience caused him to be forced into long rehab. Also, he actually has poor mental toughness because he is the only Shohoku player to come from an affluent family and his early success in high school left him unable to deal with setbacks.
Thanks a lot to Dan Li for request. ^_^
Step 1
As always all the blue and green lines are just construction lines and will be erased later so do not push on your pencil too much ^_^ I will try to be super efficient with the text so will only describe steps that require some explanation.
Make sure to leave enough free space on paper for next steps. You can see how much space you will need from the size of the paper on this picture.

Step 3
Step 4
Step 5
Step 6
Step 7
Step 8
Step 9
Lighten all the construction lines by “stamping” the kneaded eraser on the paper. Make sure to refer to the picture bellow as you need to ink only some parts of the construction lines.
Step 10
Wait till the ink is nice and dry and erase all the construction lines.
Step 11
To add colors, make sure to sketch the color outlines with the right color or pencil first.
If your goal is to become a real Mangaka and design your own manga characters make sure to try to draw Hisashi Mitsui from memory several times. Always compare the drawing to the original and correct any mistakes you see. Do this till you are happy with the result. It doesn’t have to look exactly the same, don’t sweat the details. The point is that you get the main shapes right and that it looks good. This is the best way to build a huge library of manga shapes in your memory that you can use to draw and design your own manga characters ^_-.
Draw with passion! ^_^
