Let’s learn how to draw Nagate Tanikaze from Sidonia No Kishi today!
Nagate Tanikaze (谷風 長道, Tanikaze Nagate) is the main protagonist of Knights of Sidonia series. He was raised by his grandfather Hiroki Saitō deep inside Sidonia. Later it is revealed he is actually Saitō’s clone, inheriting not only engineered features like fast wound recovery, but also Saitō’s natural talent as a pilot and warrior. He was genetically modified to be immortal from birth. Nagate was raised to believe Hiroki is his grandfather. Unlike most Sidonians who were genetically engineered to have the capacity to receive most of their energy requirements through photosynthesis and only need to consume food for only once a day, Nagate has a high metabolism that causes him to hunger easily and so he eats often.
Nagate is physically attractive for a lot of woman. He has short black hair that hangs loosely from his head. His eyes are black. He wears only uniform or his old space suit. Since an infant, Nagate lived with his grandfather and never explored the surface. Hiroki didn’t want his clone to suffer a cruel fate and hid him underground, but after Hiroki’s death, Nagate ventured out to Sidonia’s surface and forced to adapt to society. Because of Nagate’s lack of contact with humanity, he is naive to common social practices. Poor in socializing, he’s often placed in awkward situations and got into a few violent encounters with people around him. However, he proved to be a good friend to others, always putting himself at risk to protect those he cares about. Just like his “grandfather,” he eventually becomes Sidonia’s top ace.

As always all the blue and green lines are just construction lines and will be erased later so do not push on your pencil too much ^_^ I will try to be super efficient with the text so will only describe steps that require some explanation.
Make sure to leave enough free space on paper for next steps. You can see how much space you will need from the size of the paper on this picture.

Lighten all the construction lines by “stamping” the kneaded eraser on the paper. Make sure to refer to the picture bellow as you need to ink only some parts of the construction lines.

Wait till the ink is nice and dry and erase all the construction lines.

To add colors, make sure to sketch the color outlines with the right color or pencil first.
If your goal is to become a real Mangaka and design your own manga characters make sure to try to draw Nagate Tanikaze from memory several times. Always compare the drawing to the original and correct any mistakes you see. Do this till you are happy with the result. It doesn’t have to look exactly the same, don’t sweat the details. The point is that you get the main shapes right and that it looks good. This is the best way to build a huge library of manga shapes in your memory that you can use to draw and design your own manga characters ^_-.
