Let’s learn how to draw Ray from The Promised Neverland today!
Ray (レイ, Rei) is one of the main protagonists of Yakusoku no Neverland series. A year after his birth, Ray was removed from his mother’s hands and sent to Grace Field House, which is inhabited by orphans happily living together as one big family, looked after by their “Mama,” Isabella. Although they are required to take tests daily, the children are free to spend their time as they see fit. He consistently gets perfect scores during the daily exams. Ray is a model student, also known as being an avid reader.
He discovered the true purpose of the orphanage. He wasn’t able to seek help in anyone and had to watch as his siblings were shipped off, while he and Mama were the only ones in the orphanage to truly know where they were going. Because of that he decided to escape Grace Field and take a few orphans with him. Ray was exceptionally close to Emma and Norman. Together, they are considered to be “Premium quality goods”.
Ray is a slim boy of average height. He has messy short black hair, parted to the right. Chin-length clumps of hair obscure much of his left side of face. His eyes are forest-green with noticeably small black irises. He wears a white shirt and trousers along with plain shoes, which is the standard orphanage uniform. He has a tattoo of the number “81194” on the left side of his neck.
Ray appears to be aloof, quiet, introverted, meticulous, snarky and cynical. However, he is able to interact well with his fellow siblings and loves them all deeply, cares about their well-being and keeps them safe. He is an outspoken person with little patience for inconvenience and silliness. Ray’s strengths are his cunning, sharp wits, rational, logical mind and his manipulative nature. Ray gains knowledge of the outside world from the books that he reads.
Step 1
As always all the blue and green lines are just construction lines and will be erased later so do not push on your pencil too much ^_^ I will try to be super efficient with the text so will only describe steps that require some explanation.
Make sure to leave enough free space on paper for next steps. You can see how much space you will need from the size of the paper on this picture.

Step 3
Step 4
Step 5
Step 6
Step 7
Step 8
Step 9
Lighten all the construction lines by “stamping” the kneaded eraser on the paper. Make sure to refer to the picture bellow as you need to ink only some parts of the construction lines.
Step 10
Wait till the ink is nice and dry and erase all the construction lines.
Step 11
To add colors, make sure to sketch the color outlines with the right color or pencil first.
If your goal is to become a real Mangaka and design your own manga characters make sure to try to draw Ray from memory several times. Always compare the drawing to the original and correct any mistakes you see. Do this till you are happy with the result. It doesn’t have to look exactly the same, don’t sweat the details. The point is that you get the main shapes right and that it looks good. This is the best way to build a huge library of manga shapes in your memory that you can use to draw and design your own manga characters ^-^.
Draw with passion! ^_^
